Birth Announcement Etiquette
ByPatricia Snowden

Congratulations!  Your little one has arrived, and you're home from the hospital or birthing center with your newest addition.  It's going to take some time to settle in, but once your visitors have gone and the proverbial smoke has cleared, it's time to start thinking about sending those thank you cards and birth announcements.  But what's the "right" way to send those announcements?  To whom should they be sent?  How should you sign them?  So many questions, so little sleep - it's exhausting.

To begin, when should you send them out?  Well, it's a great idea to look around before your baby arrives at the various styles to choose from.  Do you want to do a photo card?  It's a great way to share your little one's picture with family and friends for the first time.  Search around and see what there is to choose from.  That way, when your baby comes home, you'll have a good idea of what you want.  Ideally, birth announcements are sent within the first two months of the baby's life, although you can feel free to send them later - until your little one is up to six months old.

To whom should you send the announcements?  Everyone is the short answer.  You're not soliciting for gifts; you're just sharing some very happy news with the world.  Feel free to send them to family, friends and co-workers - anyone who would want to know about the arrival of your little one.  Absolutely be sure to send them to family members and close friends, as the announcements will serve as a keepsake for grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins for years to come.

Include all the information that you feel comfortable listing on the announcement:  birth date and time, first and middle name of the baby, birth weight and length, parents' names as well as siblings' names.  Or you can keep the information more basic and just include your new baby's name, photo and birth date.  Really, the extent of information you provide on the announcement is up to you.

Birth announcements are a wonderful way of sharing your happy news with the world, so start looking into yours today!
